Welcome to the River Wilderness Birdlife Scavenger Hunt!

The skies, trees, wetlands, and riverbanks around River Wilderness are home to an incredible variety of birds.

Some soar high overhead.
Some quietly stalk fish along the water.
Others hammer on trees or sing from hidden branches.

On this hunt, families and explorers of all ages will discover the amazing birdlife that shares our neighborhood along the Manatee River.

Grab your camera, binoculars, and curiosity — and see how many birds you can find!


📸 What to Collect

Instead of collecting objects, this hunt collects memories and photos.

Look for birds that are:

🕊 Flying overhead
🦆 Swimming in ponds or rivers
🪶 Walking along shorelines
🌳 Perched in trees

You can also photograph clues birds leave behind, like:

• Feathers
• Nests (from a safe distance)
• Tracks in the sand
• Holes in trees from woodpeckers

⚠️ Always be aware of your surroundings first and give wildlife plenty of space.


🔍 Birds to Look For

Here are some of the amazing birds you may discover around River Wilderness.


🦅 Bald Eagle

( Haliaeetus leucocephalus )

The powerful Bald Eagle sometimes nests near rivers and lakes.

Fun fact:
Bald eagles can have a wingspan over 7 feet!

History connection:
When the Signing of the United States Constitution happened, bald eagles were already soaring across North America.


🐟 Osprey

( Pandion haliaetus )

The fishing expert of the skies — the Osprey.

Look for them hovering over water before diving feet-first to catch fish.

Fun fact:
Ospreys can close their nostrils underwater when diving.


🪶 Great Blue Heron

The elegant Great Blue Heron is often spotted standing quietly in shallow water.

Fun fact:
They hunt by staying perfectly still before striking fish with lightning speed.

Imagine this:
A heron standing by the river today might be the great-great-grandchild of birds that hunted these waters when Florida was still wilderness hundreds of years ago.


🪵 Pileated Woodpecker

Listen for the loud drumming of the Pileated Woodpecker echoing through the trees.

Fun fact:
They carve large rectangular holes in tree trunks while searching for insects.

These impressive birds inspired the famous cartoon character Woody Woodpecker.


🌙 Barred Owl

If you hear a call that sounds like:

“Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?”

You may be hearing the Barred Owl.

Fun fact:
Barred owls often hunt at night or during twilight hours.


🪶 Red-Bellied Woodpecker

The colorful Red-bellied Woodpecker is actually easier to identify by the bright red head than its belly.

Fun fact:
These birds store food in tree bark to eat later.


🦆 Waterfowl & Shorebirds

The wetlands and waterways of River Wilderness attract many birds, including:

• Pelicans

You might spot the spectacular Brown Pelican gliding above the water before diving dramatically for fish.

Fun fact:
Pelicans have a throat pouch that can hold three times more water than their stomach!

Swamp Sparrow
Marsh Wren

These tiny birds build nests woven from marsh grasses.
